Altered Imagery Techniques
Scratching surface emulsion with an Awl/Sandpaper
- Dampen first with lukewarm water
- Try sanding with a bumpy object underneath the paper! (Keys, textured plates, etc…)
Watercolors/Paints/Markers
- Light colored photos work best
- If you sand photo first, it will create a contrasting surface texture
Gel Pens
- Add text
- Try extending lines and shapes that are already there
Bleach
- Always dilute the bleach with 1 part water to 1 part bleach.
- Make sure you have a shallow pan of water on standby so you can stop the bleach effect as soon as it begins working.
- This works best on dark photos.
- Use gel medium, stickers, or masking tape to create a resist before bleaching (peel off as you rinse bleach away)
Ink Jet Transfers
- Apply a thin even coat of gel medium onto area in which you want to transfer. Place the ink jet image face down onto the area in which you want to transfer. Use a brayer to apply even pressure to the back of the image. Let it sit for a minute or two and take a peek. If you like what you see, peel the image away.

Street Art Mixed Media Style
In case you miseed or want to see it again, here is a video of the PowerPoint we discussed in class on February 1. Enjoy!
Collage: Old School Photoshop
In preparation for our visit from Chicago collage artist, Whitney Johnson, I wanted to share some collage examples with you. As you can see, collage takes altered imagery to a whole different level. This is an image by Igorska. I thought it was interesting because of the movement and connection the artist created. It's also got a bit of that street art connection going to as he included some mixed media by adding paint.
Check out Notpaper.net to see some more example from collage artists! What ideas will you take away from these as you begin thinking of altering your photographs around Marwen and your own neighborhoods?
